Vijayawada: Facing problems to handle tonnes of garbage piled in the city daily due to space constraints, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation ( VMC ) is proposing to make onsite composting units compulsory in residential and commercial complexes.It has become a burden for the VMC to handle solid wastes, for the disposal of which the civic body allocated more than Rs 30 crore. The VMC is making its focus on processing solid wastes to improve its ranking in Swacch Survenksan 2019.The civic body that streamlined vermicompost units in residential colonies started biomethenization plant to handle wet waste The VMC officials said that shifting garbage to dumping yard is costing huge, so they are starting alternative ways to reduce the burden.The civic body, which faced opposition from hotels and restaurants for issuing notices to establish composting units, has decided to make composting units compulsory in newly constructed buildings.Town planning wing of VMC has made composting units mandatory for providing building plans with the directions of higher authorities. “Segregating garbage at root level and processing it on site is a very easy thing. An establishment can get back their investment within months by selling manure and gas produced in the process. We have shown a variety of composting and biomethanization units that can be established on the roof of a building, but the majority of hotels are reluctant to adopt them,” said VMC commissioner J Nivas.“We have taken a decision to make composting units mandatory in the new buildings and issue plans and permissions based on the size of units proposed there,” he added.The mortgage will be released and occupancy will be given after inspecting the condition of composting unit in a building, the VMC commissioner said.
