Dowry harassment: Woman dies of forced starvation

The postmortem report issued from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital said Thushara had suffered severe weight loss and weighed only 20kg. Even after she delivered her second child the relatives were not allowed to meet her. As her parents could not pay it, Thushara was not allowed to leave the house and she was not allowed to meet her relatives or neighbours. But the inquest and postmortem shed light on the sufferings she had undergone in the past two years. Though her husband Chandulal (30) was taken into custody for interrogation over complaints from her relatives, he was later let off by the police.

Kollam: A 27-year-old woman who died following harassment at her husband’s house on March 21, was allegedly subjected to severe physical and mental torture, besides being denied food and treatment for over two years.The shocking details of the inhuman treatment meted out to Thushara (27) daughter of Thulasidharan and Vijayalakshmi of Ayanivelikkakathu thekku, Karunagapally came to light in the autopsy report.Thushara was brought to Kollam district hospital in an unconscious state on March 21. Later, the doctors declared her brought dead. Though her husband Chandulal (30) was taken into custody for interrogation over complaints from her relatives, he was later let off by the police. But the inquest and postmortem shed light on the sufferings she had undergone in the past two years. She had also contracted pneumonia.Pooyappally police have arrested Chanthulal (30) and mother Geethalal (55) and the duo was remanded to judicial custody. Police said the accused had admitted to denying Thushara proper food. Most often she was given sugared water and soaked rice only.It was in 2013 Thushara got married to Chandulal. Three months after the marriage, he demanded Rs 2 lakh more as dowry . As her parents could not pay it, Thushara was not allowed to leave the house and she was not allowed to meet her relatives or neighbours. She had no permission to contact the family over the phone also. Even after she delivered her second child the relatives were not allowed to meet her. It was after the Kollam East Police’s intervention that they got permission to meet Thushara and her baby.Chanthulal and Geethalal were allegedly practising witchcraft and black magic, and had erected a tin barrier around the compound of the house to keep away from the outside world, said a police officer.Rural SP K G Simon supervising the investigation said that no one in the neighbourhood had any clue about the severity of the torture. The officer also said that the mother and brother of Thushara were also questioned about their not reporting the matter to the police earlier. He said the two children would be either handed over to the childline or to Thushara’s mother.Chandulal's sister and husband are also under the surveillance of the police following complaints that they had also harassed Thushara.DSP Dinaraj, circle inspector S B Praveen and sub-inspector Sreekumar are leading the probe.
