Constitution is the backbone of Indian democracy: Dr. Ajoy Kumar

On the occasion of Constitution Day, Congress leader Dr. Ajoy Kumar extended his greetings to the people, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the dignity of the Constitution, which he called the backbone of Indian democracy. Constitution Day commemorates November 26, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution after extensive discussions and amendments. The Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated annually as Republic Day. Dr. Ajoy Kumar highlighted the pivotal role of the Constitution in shaping Indias democratic ethos and urged all Indians to uphold its sanctity. He also criticized attempts to undermine the core values of the Constitution, such as socialism and secularism, as outlined in its Preamble. Referring to a recent petition in the Supreme Court seeking the removal of these terms from the Preamble, Dr. Kumar condemned it as a reflection of BJPs "divisive mindset." He lauded the Supreme Courts decision to dismiss the petition, describing it as a victory for constitutional integrity. Dr. Kumar expressed concern over what he described as blatant violations of constitutional principles by individuals holding key positions of power. Those entrusted with upholding the Constitution are themselves tearing it apart, he remarked, accusing the ruling establishment of eroding democratic norms and institutions. In his press statement, Dr. Kumar criticized the BJP for spreading hatred and divisive politics to consolidate power. He cited examples such as the Prime Ministers inflammatory slogans like Batenge to Katenge (divide and cut) at election rallies, questioning how such rhetoric aligns with the values enshrined in the Constitution. He warned that such divisive tactics weaken the foundation of Indian democracy and called for collective efforts to protect constitutional values.
