Principals of Model Schools, SoEs get lessons of leadership by IIM-R

Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) under the Department of School Education and Literacy in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi, started the fourth session for special training of headmasters and principals- in- charge of 325 block level model schools of the State on October 15. The five- day session will conclude on October 19. The Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi has signed an MoU with JEPC to impart leadership training to the headmasters of all the CM Schools of Excellence and Adarsh Vidyalas operating in the State. In the special training session principals will be trained on different topics by IIM experts at the campus in Hindi. The primary objective of this programme is to impart training on leadership and capacity building to all the principals of the 80 CM Schools of Excellence and 325 Model Schools in Jharkhand, said Programme Director Aditya Shankar Mishra. The entire training programme has been divided in a total of three phases. In the on- going first phase, training is being imparted over a period of five days while the attendees have been divided in five batches with about 80 principals in each. Training for the first batch of this phase was conducted in early 2023 while for the second and third batches it was done in April 2024. Training for the fifth and last batch of the first phase is scheduled to begin from October 21. The theme for the first day of the session was based on strategic leadership. It also included topics like goal setting, transformation of the school, aligning the vision and mission with the objectives of the school and making the principals aware of new educational innovations and methods. Training was also given on how to attract, retain and develop high quality staff and how to provide continuous professional development to teachers and administrators. The second day of the training is based on the theme of learning and development. Principals are informed on ways to enhance the students learning and overall development- cognitive, academic, physical and social- emotional development. This session also talks about soft skills, personality development of the teaching community and students. The third day of the programme is about digital literacy. It emphasizes on how digital tools can be utilised, examples being technical skills, awareness about computers, smartphones, tablets, software application, information literacy and ways to collaborate with other online platforms. The third session will also talk about communication, collaboration, social media and other digital platforms and how to use and engage them to give the children an enjoyable learning experience. Media literacy will also be included in this session, added Mishra. The fourth day is based on the theme of community engagement- how to build partnership with all the stakeholders including parents, staff and administrators. The attendees will also be trained on negotiation skills, the National Education Policy and planning the budget of the school. The fifth day highlights working in groups- team dynamics, how to foster a positive environment, inter- personal skills and team building. An impact assessment will also be conducted by the institute to evaluate the effectiveness of the entire programme. As many as 18- 20 faculty members from IIM Ranchi are involved in the training process. Mishra is the Assistant Professor, Marketing Area, IIM Ranchi while the other three programme directors are Sakshi Jha, Ankur Jha and Tata Sai Vijay. The Director of the institute Deepak Kumar Shrivastav also plays a vital role and it is under his guidance and leadership that the institute has got this initiative and is able to conduct a training session of this scale, added Mishra.
