Consultation on Just Transition for Sustainable Urban Habitat organised

A departmental consultation on Just Transition for Sustainable Urban Habitat was organized by the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition, Government of Jharkhand, and Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED) in collaboration with the Urban Development & Housing Department, Jharkhand. The event was attended by senior officials from the Urban Development & Housing Department, Ranchi Municipal Corporation, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board, Finance Department, and other key agencies. The consultation underscored the urgent need for sustainable urban habitats amidst rapid urbanization, focusing on managing growth impacts through strategic interventions. Key actions highlighted include advancing energy transitions through renewable energy adoption, encouraging energy efficiency, and implementing green infrastructure to reduce urban carbon footprints. These efforts aim not only to foster climate-resilient cities but also to promote inclusive growth and long-term sustainability. Speaking on the occasion, A. K. Rastogi, IFS (Retd.), Chairperson of the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition, Government of Jharkhand remarked that sustainable habitats and green cities are crucial for securing a better future amid rapid urbanization. Key actions include advancing the energy transition through renewable adoption, enforcing energy efficiency, and implementing green infrastructure—all to reduce urban carbon footprints. Arava Rajkamal, Secretary, Urban Development & Housing Department, Government of Jharkhand, emphasized the commitment to sustainable urban development that is both forward-looking and environmentally sustainable. The strategy centres on building climate-resilient infrastructure through the adoption of renewable energy, cleaner technologies, and sustainable mobility solutions, while also expanding green spaces to create more sustainable habitats. Director of the State Urban Development Agency, Amit Kumar, outlined the multifaceted approach needed for creating sustainable urban habitats. He noted that this approach must address challenges such as carbon-intensive construction, energy consumption, air pollution, waste management, and transportation. Ramapati Kumar, CEO of CEED, stressed the importance of a holistic approach, characterized by inter-departmental synergy, the assimilation of global best practices, and the crafting of both immediate and long-term policy frameworks. The key takeaways from the meeting were; building climate-resilient infrastructure by incorporating best practices and success stories, undertaking pilot projects, such as waste-to-energy and rooftop solarization, to drive energy transitions, adopting climate action plans and air quality management strategies for sustainable habitats, utilising clean technologies, sustainable mobility solutions, and efficient waste management practices and expanding public green spaces to promote eco-friendly cities, contributing to overall urban sustainability.
