Kolhan Bandh: Tribal outfits protest against road construction land seizures

  • | Thursday | 1st August, 2024

Normal life in Kolhan was significantly disrupted on Wednesday as a prominent tribal outfit enforced a bandh call to protest the state governments acquisition of tribal lands for road construction. The bandh caused widespread impact, affecting vehicular movement, businesses, and educational institutions across the region. Vehicular communication on key arteries across the three districts in Kolhan, including Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan, came to a standstill as bandh supporters set up blockades by burning tyres at strategic points. The usually bustling roads were eerily deserted from early morning, with only the scenes of tyre-burning mobs breaking the silence. Commuters were left stranded, and public transport services were suspended, adding to the chaos. The bandh supporters also enforced the closure of shops, businesses, and educational institutions. Markets remained shut, and traders expressed concerns over the economic losses incurred due to the bandh. Educational activities were also disrupted as schools and colleges remained closed, leaving students and parents in a state of uncertainty. The protests were marked by fervent sloganeering, with chants such as Hemant Soren hosh mein aao and Aadivasi jameen adhigrahan bandh karo echoing through the rural landscape, especially in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The demonstrators expressed their anger and frustration over the state governments actions, demanding immediate cessation of land acquisition processes affecting tribal lands. The core issue fueling the protest was the forcible acquisition of tribal lands in Tittarbila village, Seraikela, for a bypass road project. Allegations have surfaced that the acquisition was conducted without the necessary permission from the Gram Sabha, the local self-governance body, and without compensating the affected parties. Furthermore, the acquired land reportedly included sites significant to tribal religious practices, intensifying the outrage among the tribal community. In anticipation of potential violence, the administration deployed a heavy police presence across the region. Despite these measures, clashes between the police and protesters were reported in several areas. The protesters accused the police of using excessive force, while the authorities emphasized the need to maintain law and order. The bandhs impact on daily life was profound, with many residents choosing to stay indoors to avoid the unrest. The economic repercussions were also significant, with businesses reporting substantial losses due to the enforced closures. Local transport services were severely affected, causing inconvenience to daily commuters and affecting the regions overall mobility. The state government, in response to the bandh, has reiterated its commitment to dialogue and negotiation with the tribal leaders. Officials have promised to address the grievances of the tribal communities and ensure that their rights are protected. However, the government also emphasized the importance of infrastructure development projects for the regions growth and urged all stakeholders to work towards a mutually beneficial solution. The situation in Kolhan remains tense, with the tribal outfit vowing to continue their agitation until their demands are met. The bandh has highlighted the ongoing struggle between development initiatives and the rights of tribal communities. As both sides stand firm on their positions, the need for a balanced and inclusive approach to development becomes increasingly evident.
