Former Maoist cum ex-MP Kameshwar Baitha files nomination

  • | Wednesday | 24th April, 2024

Former Maoist cum former MP Kameshwar Baitha today filed his nomination paper. He described himself as a BSP candidate. It was in 2007 that Baitha had contested his first Lok Sabha election on the BSP ticket. It was a mid term election in 2007. He had given a very tough fight to the RJD candidate Ghuran Ram in 2007 who had finally won this lok sabha seat defeating Baitha by just 20, 000 votes or so. In the general election in 2009 Baitha crossed the floor and joined the JMM. He  contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election on the JMM ticket and routed his rival Ghuran Ram of the RJD by around 23, 000 votes. Baitha thus became the first former naxal to become lok sabha member in India. He got rave reviews. Many saw in him the light of new democracy then. He was hailed as a harbinger of hope. Many believed then that there would be more such former naxals joining electoral politics. But nothing like that happened. Baitha too flew high in the air. Baitha had little over 11 percent of the vote share in the 2009 victory of him. Come 2014 and Baitha again switched to another political party. He joined the TMC of Mamta Banerjee. This election proved disastrous. He polled less than 40,000 votes. In 2014 lok sabha election Baithas poll share slumped over to little over 2 percent from little over 11 percent that he had in 2009 lok sabha election that he had won. The wise Baitha did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He has filed his nomination paper today after 10 years of sitting, watching and roaming around the constituency politically in Palamu.
