Daily cleaning at Metro stations lacking; commuters demand better maintenance

Pune: The lack of regular cleaning and growing filth in the citys Metro stations has prompted commuters to demand that the administration improve maintenance.Commuter Sanjay Shitole told TOI that taps in the toilet facility of Shivajinagar underground station are not functioning. The washroom was also very unclean. Shitoleraised a complaint through an online system, and highlighted the issue at the station managers office.However, eight days down the line, no repairs were done.Shitole said that the authorities concerned, including MahaMetro need to prioritize daily cleaning and maintenance in stations. These are not big blunders — but cannot be ignored either. We expect good facilities as part of the Metro experience, and it is the responsibility of the administration to maintain these standards, he pointed out.Sangram Patil, another Metro commuter, said cleaning at Pimpri station is not done properly. He said, Besides operation of trips on time, the authorities need to focus on amenities for commuters.Gautam Patil, who travels via Civil Court station, said he saw leaks on its roof a month after inauguration. Escalators here are out of service due to no maintenance, he said.MahaMetro said agencies have been appointed for daily cleaning at stations. Hemant Sonawane, executive director (PR), MahaMetro, said, We will beef up monitoring at stations. The initiative aims to address the issue of elevated prices of food essentials ahead of the general elections in 2024.
