Nagpur: The online ground rent payment service of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has become a hit with 15,000 property owners paying up in less than a week. This became possible as NIT officials sent the demand note IDs through text messages on the mobile phones to thousands of property owners and e-mails to about a 1,000. Sachin Kurve, acting chairman of NIT, told TOI, "We asked the people who came to make cash payment at NIT to furnish their mobile numbers. We assumed that the numbers belonged to property owners. These numbers were used to send the demand note IDs." Explaining the process, Kurve said that the ID is required for paying rent online. "If you log on to our website, you will see the icon for online payment. If you click the icon, it asks for your demand note ID. You can then view your demand and pay it," he added. If you want to avoid going to NIT to pay your ground rent, you can register with NIT through its website. You will have to furnish your name, e-mail ID, mobile number and Aadhar card number or PAN. NIT checks the data for discrepancy to prevent touts from misusing this facility. Once it is satisfied that you are a genuine user, it sends you a temporary password to operate the account. Kurve further said that there were several advantages of registering with NIT. "If you have more than one property on NIT land, you will be able to pay all the demand notes from your account. The biggest advantage is that you will be safe from property frauds. If someone wants to sell your property and applies for a no objection certificate (NOC) from us, you will be sent the consumer facilitation centre (CFC) ID on your mobile. You will immediately realize that something is wrong," he said. The chairman further said that the mobile number provided in the beginning will be considered as the principal number and only the property owner will have the right to change it.
