Nagpur: The Nagpur University (NU) has frozen first year admissions to 53 education colleges after they failed the local enquiry committee (LEC) inspections. NU is yet to make the names public. The reluctance to make the names of 53 colleges public is set to create confusion among students during the ongoing admission season. This is the second year when NU has held back names of such colleges. On August 31 last year, the NU had uploaded the list of 33 such colleges on its website following high court directives. In fact, then too, the university had not named 43 colleges that were running without teachers and infrastructure. Only those colleges that had applied for closure were named. In its affidavit before the high court, the NU had assured to take strict action against 76 errant colleges and conduct inspections as per National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) norms. The HC had then asked the NU to give the list of erring colleges wide publicity through newspapers to create awareness among students. This year, the NU has been dithering on the issue of conducting LEC inspections and laying norms as per HC orders regarding education colleges. There is also on clarity on how the figure of 53 was finalized. On July 9, vice chancellor SP Kane had held a hearing. According to Kane, the LEC committees had found 27 colleges unfit for grant of continuation of affiliation when the inspections and scrutiny were completed earlier this month. Of them, 14 managed to show compliance within a week’s time and were granted continuation of affiliation, Kane said. The VC and pro-VC Pramod Yeole had ruled out the possibility of making these names public. They had contended that the list would be forwarded to Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) which conducts admissions through state CET cell and there was no need to upload names.Kane said there were total 128 education colleges comprising 88 BEd and MEd, and 40 BPEd and MPed colleges affiliated to the university. The names of 53 colleges may remain under wraps as DHE would only make the approved college list public on the website.
