DFRL to launch two-year masters in food technology

For the first time, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) will be offering two-year MSc in food technology , starting next academic year. Only a person qualified in MSc in food technology is allowed to clear batches of food for army use. The University of Mysore has also recognized DFRL for conducting MSc and PhD programmes in food science and technology. ""To start the course, we met vice-chancellor of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, who urged us to go ahead with the course. The faculty members will be highly-qualified scientists from food industry.Speaking to TOI, Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, director, DFRL, said, "The course was proposed to meet the requirements of the army.

Mysuru: For the first time, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) will be offering two-year MSc in food technology , starting next academic year. To start with, intake will be restricted to 10 candidates and preference will be given to those working in military, including army, navy, air force and DRDO.University Grants Commission has already given green signal to start the course from next academic year.Since 1992-93, DFRL has been conducting post graduate diploma courses in food analysis and quality assurance, of 10 months duration, recognized by the University of Mysore. The University of Mysore has also recognized DFRL for conducting MSc and PhD programmes in food science and technology. The laboratory is well equipped with advanced instruments like GLC, HPLC, amino acid analyser, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, colour difference meter, automatic microbial monitors etc. The faculty members will be highly-qualified scientists from food industry.Speaking to TOI, Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, director, DFRL, said, "The course was proposed to meet the requirements of the army. Only a person qualified in MSc in food technology is allowed to clear batches of food for army use.""To start the course, we met vice-chancellor of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, who urged us to go ahead with the course. The syllabus of the course is also completed and the entrance exam will be all-India based," he added.
