If you live in the Mumbai metropolitan region, you spend about 8.4 per cent of your monthly income on transport on an average, says a study of around 5,000 households coducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to understand commuting trends. The comprehensive transportation study, carried over two years (2017-2018) to understand the transport needs in MMR up to 2041, also revealed that almost half the people walk or cycle to work, and of the remaining half, a majority of the people take the train. For those making up to Rs 5,000 a month, expenditure on transport is Rs 380; Rs 1,414 for Rs 30,000-40,000 income bracket; Rs 1,949 for Rs 40,000-60,000; Rs 2,074 for the Rs 60,000-1,00,000 bracket; and Rs 1,953 for those who draw above Rs 1,00,000 . The study has stressed that potential changes in income levels over the next 25 years could have a major impact on the amount of urban travel. "A major influence on urban travel is people changing jobs but not homes, even if this involves more travel," it says. The study says 3.6 per cent of households have an income up to Rs 5,000 a month; 28.4 per cent draw Rs 15,000-Rs 20,000; 6.8 per cent Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000. Roughly the top one percent make Rs 60,000 and above. After the local trains, the preferred modes of transport are buses, two-wheelers, auto rickshaws, four-wheelers, taxis and the Metro.
