Mangaluru: Man gets 5-year jail for assaulting cop

MANGALURU: The fifth additional district and session’s court at Puttur on Saturday sentenced a man to undergo five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty.The court that imposed fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused, also directed him to undergo an additional one year jail term in the case of failure to pay fine. The police constable sustained fracture on his left hand in the assault.Even as Narayan slumped to the ground and Umar threatened to hurt him further with the rod, Vishwanath lunged forward, snatched the rod from his hand and subdued him.Then Puttur police inspector Manjaiah had arrested the accused and filed the FIR. The court also imposed one-year imprisonment and fine of Rs 2,000 on charge of intentionally insulting, provoking a person.The court which directed the accused Umar Farooq, 29, resident of Jidekallu village in Chikkamudnuru of Puttur taluk to undergo imprisonment of 3-months in case of failure to pay the Rs 2000 fine, however found him not guilty of the charge of attempt to murder, which would have attracted jail term that could extend up to 10 years.

The incident took place on April 17, 2015 when Ahmed attacked police personnel from Puttur Town police station.Responding to telephonic call from Johara that Umar was assaulting Tasmiya, her daughter, head constables Narayana and Vishwanath Rai from Town police station went to her residence at Jidekallu to find the accused attempting to hit Tasmiya with an iron rod.When they entered the house to intervene, Umar abused them and swung the rod aiming at Narayan’s head. The police constable sustained fracture on his left hand in the assault.Even as Narayan slumped to the ground and Umar threatened to hurt him further with the rod, Vishwanath lunged forward, snatched the rod from his hand and subdued him.Then Puttur police inspector Manjaiah had arrested the accused and filed the FIR.
