more-in MADURAI Save Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) Coalition, a group of academicians working to address irregularities in the MKU and higher education in the State, has raised suspicion over State government’s opposition to grant of bail to Nirmala Devi, V. Murugan and S. Karuppsamy, accused in the audio tape scandal case. Speaking to the media here on Friday, members of the coalition expressed concern over the denial of bail to the three though the police had already filed the charge sheet in the case. The coalition wondered whether bail was denied to them due to the fear that they might name other key people involved in the scandal. On the recent statement made by Governor Banwarilal Purohit that he heard from academicians about corruption in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in the past and VCs were appointed in a fair and transparent manner during his tenure, the Coalition said the role of Governor’s office did not end with the appointment of the VCs. Pointing out that there were widespread allegations of corruption in the appointments of senior officials and teaching and non-teaching staff in a number of universities in Tamil Nadu, they urged the Governor’s office to constitute a high-level committee or recommend an investigation by the CBI into all these allegations. Stating that the functioning of Governor’s office must be beyond doubts in matters related to universities, the coalition demanded absolute transparency in the appointment of Governor nominees to Syndicate and various other bodies. “Similarly, there should be total transparency in the selection and appointment of the V-Cs. Details of all the applicants, shortlisted candidates and criteria for selection must be made public,” the coalition said in its statement.
