Ludhiana, July 23 Thieves broke into a shop and attempted to pry open the shutters of five more shops at the Red Cross Bhawan market on Mall Road in the wee hours of Tuesday. They decamped with Rs 6,000 lying in the cash box of the shop. In the morning when the Division 8 police were informed by the shopkeepers, police officials immediately reached the spot and started investigation. Footage of CCTV cameras installed at one of the shops is being scanned. Abhay, owner of Abhay’s Piazza, said thieves struck at his shop at midnight. “There are seven shops at the Red Cross Bhawan market. They tried to open the shutters of five more shops. Thieves managed to pry open the shutter of my shop. They ransacked the entire shop and decamped with Rs 4,000 lying in the cash box. It seems the thieves entered my shop thinking they would find gold jewellery there. But, in fact, we sell artificial jewellery only,” said Abhay. The other shops targeted by the thieves include Evershine (school uniform shop) and Red Mapple (garment shop). Gurmeet Singh, SHO, said efforts were on to identify the thieves and they would be nabbed soon. He said only one CCTV camera was found functional in the market. However, the thieves were not captured on that camera. Rs 4,000 stolen from jewellery shop “Thieves managed to pry open the shutter of my shop. They decamped with Rs 4,000 lying in the cash box.
