Two kanwariyas were killed and five others were seriously injured after they were hit by an unidentified vehicle near Azamgarh- Biharipur Dagera road in Ghazipur during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, police said. One of the deceased kanwariya was 15 years old while the other was 13. Both were residents of Azamgarh and were on their way to Kaithi in Varanasi. One of them died on the spot while the other succumbed to injuries during treatment. The injured persons are currently under treatment and one of them has been referred to Trauma Centre in Varanasi for treatment, police disclosed. Reports said that late Sunday night, a dozen kanwariyas were going on foot to Markandeya Dham in Kaithi to collect Ganga water. They reached near Bhabhaura turn at around 9 pm. Meanwhile, a high-speed SUV coming from Azamgarh crushed six kanwariyas. In the accident, 15-year-old Matru alias Aditya, son of Rajendra Rajbhar of Ameda village and 13-year-old Kaushal Ram, son of Lal Bahadur Ram, were killed while four suffered serious injuries. On getting information from the nearby people, the police reached the spot and took the injured to the community health centre in Saidpur, from where one of the injured was referred to Varanasi Trauma Centre. After the accident, the driver fled with the SUV. Varanasis Deputy Inspector General of Police OP Singh inspected the spot and met the injured and directed the officials concerned for their treatment. He said that two people had died in the accident. The DIG said the CCTV footage around the spot had been scanned and efforts were being made to trace the accused driver and vehicle.
