Villages in the dark, crops damaged across Villupuram

Cyclone Vardah , which made a landfall near Chennai on Monday afternoon had plunged several villages in Marakkanam, Villupuram district, into darkness by uprooting after dozens of electric posts. Several acres of crops including paddy and plantain were damaged. The severe cyclone also uprooted several trees. The district administration has begun the process to identity the extent of damage of properties, crops and cattle. Several passengers were stranded at various railway stations in Villupuram and Cuddalore districts after the Southern Railway cancelled and diverted many trains.

VILLIPURAM: Cyclone Vardah , which made a landfall near Chennai on Monday afternoon had plunged several villages in Marakkanam, Villupuram district, into darkness by uprooting after dozens of electric posts.Marakkanam was one of the most affected parts in the district as several acres of crops including paddy and plantain were damaged. The severe cyclone also uprooted several trees. The district administration has begun the process to identity the extent of damage of properties, crops and cattle.Marakkanam registered the maximum rainfall in the district with 67mm for last 24 hours ending at 8am on Tuesday followed by Tindivanam (53mm), Gingee (43mm), Vanur (38mm), Villupuram (31.5mm), Thirukoilur (29.5mm), Kallakuruchi (18mm) and Sankarapuram (11mm). Cuddalore district received an average rainfall of 4mm. Chidambaram received the maximum rainfall with 11mm.Several passengers were stranded at various railway stations in Villupuram and Cuddalore districts after the Southern Railway cancelled and diverted many trains.
