DYAL SINGH COLLEGE ROW Syed Ali Ahmed New Delhi, November 23 Intensifying its move against the governing body of Dyal Singh College to rename it as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya, Sikhs approached the Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) that questioned the rechristening exercise. The DSGMC president Manjit Singh (GK) demanded to rename two colleges of Delhi University in the name of two heroes of Sikh community - Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and Shaheed Udham Singh. The DMC questioned the Principal of Dyal Singh College (Evening), Pawan Kumar Sharma on renaming it as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya. In a letter written to the Principal, the DMC asked under which Act and rule the college had initiated to change the name of Dyal Singh College (evening shift) to other name. What was the compulsive need to change name of the college at this stage and what procedure under the relevant law has been adopted by the college in taking such a decision? Kartar Singh Kochhar, Sikh member of the DMC asked these questions after he received a complaint against the college governing body. The matter has been evaluated in the commission in light of the fact that the governing body of the college decided unanimously to rename it as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya. He said that since the DMC was legally bound to watch the interest of minority people all over Delhi and having received the complaint from a Sikh, it had become all the more mandatory to get the issue resolved. Reacting to the governing body decision, GK said that if the contributions of Sikhs towards the nation were to be recognised, the names of Motilal Nehru College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College be changed as Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College and Shaheed Udham Singh College respectively.
