CM asks Sisodia to consider reservation for city students

In the city, currently the Delhi Technological University and the Indraprastha University give reservation to students domiciled in Delhi but the majority of the colleges, including Delhi University have high cut-offs. The BJP MLA urges the Chief Minister to take up this issue with the authorities concerned and thereby support the initiative he has taken. He said the 28 colleges affiliated with Delhi University should implement the reservation in admission. Sirsa believes that such a step is the need of the hour as many Delhi students have to move to other states due to the absence of such provision in Delhi University. He also reminded the Chief Minister of the fact that Delhi University provides 75 per cent reservation in postgraduate medical courses for students hailing from Delhi and have completed their studies in Delhi.

New Delhi, June 12 Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked Education Minister Manish Sisodia to explore the possibility of offering 80 per cent reservation to students of the national Capital in the Delhi Government-aided colleges. Pointing out that he had been getting complaints from students of Delhi about not securing admissions in the city colleges, Kejriwal also asked Sisodia to see if 80-85 per cent of guest teachers could be inducted from Delhi through a drive being conducted to appoint 9,000 teachers while adding that the step would help generate jobs for the people of Delhi. “I request Manish ji to explore the possibility of giving reservation in 28 colleges which get aid from the Delhi Government,” he said. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief was interacting with volunteers through Google Hangout. He touched upon various other issues and discussed initiatives taken by his government, especially in the health and education sectors and went on to appeal to volunteers to popularise the AAP government’s schemes. He said the AAP government aims to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the national Capital. Kejriwal said the purview of the government's education scheme which offers students of the city loan up to Rs 10 lakh has been expanded with students allowed to avail the benefit for studying anywhere in the world. Hence, Delhi University’s institutional preference for admission becomes an established reality. Sirsa said legally it is a settled positions that reservation whether based on domicile or intuition in the matter of admissions is not unconstitutional. The BJP MLA cites the examples of other states such as Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Assam where reservation based on domicile in their universities has been widely accepted. The Supreme Court has also held up this view and declares it to be constitutional while directing other states to follow. Sirsa believes that such a step is the need of the hour as many Delhi students have to move to other states due to the absence of such provision in Delhi University. The BJP MLA urges the Chief Minister to take up this issue with the authorities concerned and thereby support the initiative he has taken.
