NEW DELHI: An FIR of negligence has been registered in an incident in which a two-year-old girl injured her fingers when a Delhi Metro employee allegedly shut the door of a ticket vending machine (TVM) on her hand at Uttam Nagar metro station earlier this month. The child had to undergo surgery to stitch back her fingers. The child’s father, Amit Saxena, claimed that they were not provided any assistance by DMRC officials, apart from first aid. The employee who had allegedly shut the door on the child’s hand is being questioned.Saxena said the incident occurred around 4.30pm on March 9. “I was recharging my metro card, while my wife was standing a few feet away. I suddenly heard our daughter scream and saw her fingers bleeding profusely. A metro employee who was repairing a TVM had shut the door before she could pull out her hand,” he added. The metro employees directed Saxena to the station controller’s room for first aid. “A guard took us to the room, but there wasn’t enough first aid material. The controller later found a bandage and tied it on my daughter’s hand and asked me to take her to a hospital,” he said. The child was admitted to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri where she was operated upon by a plastic surgeon. After two days, she was discharged after a minor amputation of her finger. The family later filed an RTI with the metro station controller to find out the precautions taken while repairing equipment. They alleged that there were no guardrails, barricades or a security guard standing nearby to alert people about a repair being conducted.A DMRC spokesperson said they will provide all possible help to the child. “It appears that the girl child was left unattended and had put her hands on the TVM. The maintenance staff shut the door unaware of the fact that the child has put her hand on the machine. DMRC advises the general public not to leave their little children alone at metro stations or in trains to avoid any untoward incident. Regular announcements are also made at escalators and lifts informing the public about the dos and don’ts in metro premises,” said a statement.
