GURUGRAM: Police had dug out skeletal remains from near the Akhileshwar temple in Gwalior after alleged paedophile and serial killer Sunil confessed to a rape-murder at the spot but are having a hard time identifying the body. They hit a roadblock after forensic analysis could not specify the sex of the victim. However, it did establish the victim’s age, between five and seven years.Gwalior police suspect the bones belong to a five-year-old girl, who was abducted from a bhandara near the temple in 2013.Interrogating Sunil would provide a clearer picture, said Gwalior police who have now obtained permission to take Sunil, who is currently lodged in Bhondsi jail, on production remand. Dinesh Kumar Bhojak, the SHO of Kampoo police station, Gwalior, said, “We will take Sunil on production remand from December 17 as per directions of the court. We can verify our suspicions in the case only after questioning him.” The accused would also be questioned on other rape-murder cases involving minor girls in Gwalior, said police. The police are also planning to get a DNA sample from the five-year-old’s mother to match it with DNA from the bones. The report would be available within ten days, they said. “It’s is our best hope to get to the truth. A DNA match will help identify the body. The girl was abducted some five years ago and the body has been lying buried since. So, forensic evidence may have been destroyed. Circumstantial evidence, however, matches Sunil’s confession,” said Dharmendra Kushwah, the sub-inspector of Kampoo police station, Gwalior. He added, “Once we get him on remand, we will also be able to get leads to others cases.”However, the girl’s mother, who is a Gwalior resident, has refused to accept that her daughter was raped and murdered by Sunil, bringing the investigation under scanner. “My daughter is still alive and I will find her one day. Police have misled me and are misleading everyone. That body is not hers,” said the mother, who makes a living as a domestic help. “How can they say it’s my daughter? Those bones could belong to anyone. They have not taken our DNA samples, so they don’t know if it’s our daughter,” she said. Police, however, said that her reaction showed a mother’s angst.Gurgaon police, meanwhile, are preparing a chargesheet linking Sunil to four rape-murder cases in the city. When contacted, police commissioner K K Rao said, “We are working on filing a chargesheet as soon as possible but still waiting for the forensic sciences laboratory (FSL) reports.”
