Republic Day 2018: The story behind President Buggy

The use of buggy was revived by President Ram Nath Kovind’s predecessor Pranab Mukherjee after being discontinued for almost 30 year due to security reason and presidents began using limousines for travels including Republic Day functions.

Republic Day is celebrated on January 26th to mark the day when the Indian constitution came to force on January 26, 1950, three years after gaining independence from British rule in 1047.

The 69th Republic Day will first one under the regime of Ram Nath Kovind and as always, the President will continue the tradition by riding a six-horse buggy to attend the Beating Retreat ceremony.

The elegant gold-plated, horse-drawn buggy originally belonged to the Viceroy of India during the British era. However, after the partition, both India and Pakistan wanted the historic buggy, and there was no longer a higher power to sort the issue.

So Lt Col Thakur Govind Singh from India and Pakistan Arm’s Sahabzada Yaqub decided to sort the issue via effective manner and that was via coin toss, since then the buggy become the pride of India.
