COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore rural police on Friday arrested a 31-year-old man, who claimed to be a trainer from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), for pushing down a 19-year-old college student from the second floor of a building during a disaster management drill at a private college here on Thursday even as the NDMA clarified that it had not been involved in the drill and that the trainer had not been authorised by it.N Logeswari, a second-year BBA student at Kovai Kalaimagal College or Arts and Science at Vellimalaipattinam near Narasipuram , died after hitting the sunshade of the first floor of the building.Police booked trainer G Arumugam of Vandalur in Chennai under Section 304 (ii) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was kept at the Alandurai police station where additional superintendent of police G S Anitha was grilling him.On Thursday, the college management conducted a disaster management drill. Arumugam took a theory class for the students about disaster management. Later, 20 students were selected to jump off the second floor to the ground as part of a training to escape during a disaster.More than ten students stood on the ground holding a net, and the selected students started to jump off the second floor.Logeswari was one among the 20 students selected to jump. She sat on the sunshade of the second floor since she was afraid to jump. The trainer pushed her down. The girl hit the sunshade of the first floor while falling and suffered severe injuries on her neck. She was declared brought dead in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.The girl's father, A Nallagounder, 63, of Nathegounden Pudur, who is a farmer, told reporters that his daughter was pushed down by the trainer. "When my daughter refused to jump, she should not have been forced to jump. But the trainer pushed her down. The college management did not supervise the drill and I lost my daughter," said Nallagounder.Her mother, Sivakami, told reporters that the college management should take the responsibility for the incident. “The management did not inform us about the incident,” she said.The National Disaster Management Authority on Friday clarified that it had no role in the conduct of the drill in the Coimbatore college.NDMA tweeted: “Unfortunate that this incidence has happened & we have lost a young life. Our heartfelt condolences to the family. However, the National Disaster Management Authority wasn't involved in this drill. The trainer wasn't authorised by NDMA to conduct such a drill."Condoling the death of Logeswari, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to her family.The chief minister said he had directed police and the higher education department to take stringent action against those who organised the drill “without obtaining due approval.”
