more-in The sixth edition of The Wipro Chennai Marathon (TWCM) 2017 is scheduled to be held in the city on December 3. Around 25,000 runners are expected to take part in the event, touted as the second largest marathon in the country. There will be three categories — 10 km, half marathon (21.1 km) and full marathon (42.195 km). Last year, over 20,000 people took part in the event, which started in 2012 with just 6,000 runners. Vikram Mohan, Chennai Runners race director, TWCM 2017, said the marathon would not be successful without the support of the city. The theme for this year’s event is Chennai Runs together. “The theme was inspired by the spirit of Chennai, where the entire city came together and back on its feet during the 2015 floods and Cyclone Vardah,” he said. He also said that in the coming years, the event would be one of the major marathons in the world. Shahid Kandrikar, president, Chennai Runners, said they planned to create a world-class marathon on the lines of the Boston Marathon by 2020. Since the marathon also contributes to charity, TWCM is partnering with United Way of Chennai and Isha Vidya this year to focus on various causes in the education and healthcare sectors.
