Punjab farmers warns govt to begin hunger strike from Nov 26 at Khanauri

  • | Monday | 18th November, 2024

In a firm declaration of their discontent, farmer leaders hailing from Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), led by Jagjit Singh Dallewal, on Saturday issued a stark warning to the government announcing their decision to escalate their protest with a hunger strike starting November 26 at Khanauri border if their demands remain unmet.   The leaders raised serious concerns about the indifference shown by both the central and state governments toward farmers grievances. Addressing the media after meeting, Dallewal accused the government of ignoring critical demands, including guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) and transparency in the procurement of fertilizers and crops. He alleged that repeated requests for meaningful action have been disregarded, leaving farmers in distress.   In a strong message, the farmer leaders warned that the government would be held accountable for any harm that befalls Dallewal during the hunger strike. They affirmed their commitment to continuing the protest, with other leaders ready to step up and lead if required.   The protest is set to intensify in the days ahead. On November 17, farmers will commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji at the Khanauri Border with a religious event, including an akhand path and kirtan darbar. On November 18, the organizations will hold another press conference to unveil the next phase of their strategy.   Farmer leaders Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher highlighted the dire economic challenges faced by farmers. They pointed out discrepancies in MSP implementation and criticized the practices in grain markets, where farmers suffer deductions in crop prices and weights. Furthermore, the skyrocketing prices of fertilizers, such as the increase in the cost of a bag of fertilizer from Rs 1,350 to Rs 1,750, are exacerbating their financial struggles.
