Rift in SAD: Senior leader Ayali expresses discontent over party decisions

  • | Friday | 1st November, 2024

In a surprising development within Punjabs prominent party, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a senior leader and Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali on Wednesday hinted at ongoing friction over party decisions, particularly around SADs choice not to contest in upcoming by-elections to four assembly segments.   Ayali, known for his grassroots connection and influence in Ludhiana, disclosed that unresolved differences with the party have left him refraining from endorsing or commenting on recent party stances. He expressed his concerns when questioned about SADs decision to skip by-elections. His response indicated underlying discord. Everyone knows that there have been issues between me and the party on certain matters, he stated, firmly adding, I wont be commenting on any party decision at the moment.   The comments come amid mounting speculation about an internal divide within SAD, especially following the partys controversial stance on key state issues and its decision to stand aside in the current political season. Ayalis response points to discontent in a party historically known for maintaining internal unity, a quality that has helped it navigate Punjabs complex political landscape for decades.   SADs choice to withdraw from by-elections this year is seen by many political analysts as an attempt to recalibrate its strategy, focusing instead on addressing core issues and re-establishing trust with its base. However, insiders suggest that the decision might also stem from internal disagreements over the partys direction, possibly linked to SADs performance in recent elections and the feedback it has received from key leaders like Ayali.   Ayali, an MLA and a staunch supporter of SADs principles, has voiced opposition to certain policy decisions in the past also, reflecting a segment within the party pushing for introspection and alignment with farmers interests. His call for timely crop lifting and support for Punjabs agricultural backbone highlights this focus. For a state like Punjab, where agriculture is central to economic stability, Ayali emphasized the importance of the government taking urgent action.   Punjabs farmers are its backbone, Ayali remarked, underlining the need for timely crop lifting and fair prices for farmers. He called on both the Central and State Governments to prioritize these issues, arguing that Punjabs growth and prosperity are intrinsically linked to its farmers well-being.   With Punjabs political landscape becoming increasingly competitive, SADs internal unity will be crucial for maintaining its influence. Ayalis silence on SADs by-election strategy, however, raises questions about whether internal reconciliation is achievable in time to address the pressing needs of Punjabs citizens, particularly the farming community.   Former MP Jagmeet Brar Withdraws from Gidderbaha Bypoll Race Former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar has withdrawn his nomination from the Gidderbaha bypoll, citing consultations with his advisory committee. Brar, who had filed as an independent candidate last Friday, confirmed his decision on Wednesday, refraining from endorsing any candidate in the race.   Brar said that he chose to step back from contesting bypolls after consulting his 21-member advisory committee. I am neither supporting any candidate nor joining the Congress, said Brar, whose decision surprised some political observers, considering that former MPs entry had raised the stakes in a closely watched election.   His remarks during his announcement did not hold back criticism of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, whose wife Amrita Warring is the Congress candidate for Gidderbaha bypoll. Brar demanded a probe into allegations of a transport scam against Warring, calling for accountability from the Congress leadership. I demand an investigation and action against Raja Warring, who has been mired in controversies and accusations surrounding a transport scam, Brar said.
