Mohalis Green Corridor Saves Four Lives Through Organ Donation

  • | Saturday | 21st September, 2024

A remarkable act of generosity transformed tragedy into hope as the family of a 39-year-old man from Mohali chose to donate his organs after he was declared brain-dead due to a brain aneurysm. The selfless decision has given four people a new lease on life, showcasing the profound impact of organ donation.   Admitted to Max Hospital on September 16, the patient faced a severe battle with a brain aneurysm and blood clots. Despite the medical teams efforts, he was declared brain-dead just days later. In the midst of their grief, his wife made the courageous choice to donate his organs — two kidneys and two corneas — ensuring that her husbands legacy would live on in those in desperate need of transplants.   To facilitate the swift transport of the organs, a green corridor was established between Max Hospital and PGIMER, as well as Fortis Hospital. This special route, cleared by authorities, allowed the organs to travel the 10-kilometer distance in an impressive eight minutes, ensuring they reached the recipients without delay.   One of the kidneys was transplanted into a 63-year-old male patient at Max Hospital, who had been on the waiting list for nearly eight years. Dr Jagdish Sethi, Director of Urology, Uro-Oncology, and Kidney Transplant Services, performed the surgery. The recipient had been suffering from chronic kidney disease, and this timely donation has provided him a second chance at life, said Dr Sethi, highlighting the significance of the donation.   The remaining kidney and two corneas were allocated to recipients at PGIMER and Fortis Hospital, ensuring that all four patients received the transplants they desperately needed. Each recipient is now on the road to recovery, thanks to the rapid response of the medical teams involved.   Dr Pinak Moudgil, Executive Vice-President at Max Hospital, expressed profound gratitude to the donors family for their brave decision to help others during their time of loss. We remain indebted to the family for their generosity. Organ donation is a powerful way to give hope to those on the brink of despair, and its a cause we should all support, he emphasized, underscoring the need for increased awareness about the importance of organ donation.   Thanks to the swift coordination by authorities, including the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) and the Punjab Police, the green corridor enabled the successful transfer of the organs, leading to a seamless series of life-saving surgeries.   This inspiring story serves as a powerful reminder of how one courageous decision can make a significant difference in the lives of others, turning a moment of sorrow into an opportunity for new beginnings.
