Amid rising complaints of substandard food products being distributed to pregnant and lactating mothers and children up to six years, Punjabs Social Security and Development of Women and Children Minister Dr Baljit Kaur on Sunday directed the state Health Department to conduct thorough inspections. During surprise visits to Gidderbaha and Muktsar, she personally checked the food quality.   The Minister mentioned that although she did not find any immediate issues with the food, she has instructed the Health Department to take samples for further testing. Concurrently, statewide inspections are being carried out.   The Ministers surprise inspection included visits to Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) offices in Faridkot and Gidderbaha, prompted by concerns about the food quality in Anganwadi centers. She inspected supplies of sweet dalia, khichdi, and puffed rice, tasting the dishes on-site and expressing satisfaction with their quality.   She highlighted that all food items for Anganwadi centers in Punjab are supplied by Markfed and undergo rigorous quality checks by district-level officials before distribution. She also examined the packaging, manufacturing, and expiry dates of the food products.   Reiterating the Governments commitment to the welfare of its citizens, implementing various people-centric schemes, the Minister reiterated the Governments dedication to providing excellent health facilities and ensuring high-quality food for vulnerable groups.   Department representatives assured the Minister that the ration has a three-month shelf life and is promptly distributed to Anganwadi centers. They emphasized ongoing quality checks and regular training for Anganwadi helpers to maintain food safety standards.
