Rs 1.58 crore gold jewellery found in van

A Maruti Eeco van was intercepted and 17 packets of diamond-studded gold jewellery found in the vehicle. MOHALI: Police on Monday recovered diamond-studded gold jewellery worth Rs 1.58 crore from two men in a car in Mataur.Parminder Singh and Jatinder Singh, both from Mohali , work for a private shipping company called BBC Logistics that has its office in Industrial Area, Phase VII. The two men failed to show the mandatory documents required to carry the jewellery,” said inspector Jagdev Singh, station house officer, Mataur. Sources said the income tax sleuths will ask the two accused to show supporting documents of the jewellery.

A Maruti Eeco van was intercepted and 17 packets of diamond-studded gold jewellery found in the vehicle. The two men failed to show the mandatory documents required to carry the jewellery,” said inspector Jagdev Singh, station house officer, Mataur. “Address of various jewellers were written on each packets. The accused claimed they are going to deliver them to Chandigarh and Panchkula-based jewellers,” he said.Police registered a daily diary report (DDR) and handed over the case to the income tax department for further investigation. Sources said the income tax sleuths will ask the two accused to show supporting documents of the jewellery. If they fail to do so, the jewellery will be seized and the two penalised.Police said since the Lok Sabha election model code of conduct has come into force, it has become necessary to carry mandatory documents with cash and jewellery.On February 4, two men were caught with diamond-studded gold jewellery and American diamonds at the Chandigarh international airport. On September 19, 2018, American diamond-studded gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 5.95 crore was seized at the airport.
