As thieves strike at library, members seek security

CHANDIGARH: Recent thefts at TS Central State Library in Sector 17 have left its members worried.In the past few months, several cycles, mobile phones, bags and purses of readers had been stolen from the library complex. One incident was even captured in a CCTV camera of library in which a man was seen going out of the library with a stolen bag. Concerned over the rising crimes, a group of readers had met the SSP. The SSP on Tuesday directed the SHO to provide proper security at the library and arrest the accused as soon as possible.On August 4, a woman member of the library reported stealing of her purse from outside the washroom. On being informed, the library officials checked the CCTV footage and saw a man going out of the library with her bag. The woman had kept her mobile phone, Rs 500 and other documents in the purse. She said after two days of the incident, another member of library lost his mobile phone to thieves. She also alleged that no FIR has been registered in the case so far.Women members of the library also raised safety issues around the library washroom. In November 2017, a bicycle of Punjab IG’s son worth Rs 45000 was stolen from near the library.The authorities have assured the members that such cases would not take place in the library.
