Contrary to the general perception that the government of the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) led by Mohan Charan Majhi as the chief minister would have come tough on the ousted BJD dispensation, the former has, for once, demonstrated grace and maturity coupled with purposefulness.

It started from the word go when after the swearing in, the Prime Minister Modi walked up to the former chief minister Naveen Patnaik to exchange pleasantries.

Patnaik was in his usual magnanimity congratulating the cabinet ministers for the success.

Sources in the BJP would have us believe that, the PM in a display of his illustrious gesture advised all the ministers to visit Naveen Patnaik’s residence to pay their respect to the man who led Odisha for little more than 24 years.

The new chief minister was the first to meet the former CM at his residence to seek his blessings.

“ Even after a long phase of brick-batting during the recent campaign such gestures from the BJP and the PM in particular were indeed heartwarming for Patnaik which demonstrate that, in politics such mutual regards were on a diminish but what happened on June 12 was the civility that is sometimes above politics” observed Rabi Das, senior political analyst.

“That is the warmth which should prevail in politics regardless of who won and who lost” Das added.

All the cabinet ministers reaching Naveen’s residence to meet him was a gesture that flattened many barbs and reduced bitterness.

“ Despite what had transpired during the campaigns, now Modi’s gesture at Patnaik was of course a reminiscence of their old bonhomie that both, perhaps, never want to get buried under political blaze.

Politics behind

All said and done the cordial atmosphere was not  necessarily limited to formal civility but some politics also.

The Modi government which readies itself to face the firestorm in the parliament with a number less than 300 can again bank upon the BJD’s ten members in the Upper House.

Even in the Odisha Assembly the BJP cannot look the other way always from the BJD in certain matters so the former cannot afford to embitter the situation

After taking over power in Odisha the Bharatiya Janata Party government kick-started its debut with some major decisions that were eagerly awaited by millions of people in Odisha.

Importantly, the new government`s quick decision to open the four gates of the temple of Lord Jagannath of Puri was a huge respite for millions of devotees who come to Puri for the Lord’s Darshan.

Because after the Parikrama Project devotees were kept waiting for hours under the Sun and then blistered through about one kilometer barefoot in this sizzling solstice.

“ We are indeed relieved to have all the gates opened as we do not have to undergo so much pain before reaching the temple” said one devotee in Puri

That was in fact a promise made by the BJP during the campaigns.

During the previous  BJD government period  only the  main gate of the temple was  opened for the devotees  leading to a lot of resentment  among the  visitors who had a tough time  standing in long queues to have dasrah of  the Lords.

Mohan Charan Majhi, the new CM also  said that the cabinet  also decided to create a corpus fund of Rs.500 crores  for the development, beautification  and conservation of Sri Jagannath temple and also to  deal with several problems of the  devotees.

The CM also said a special policy, the Samrudha Krushak  Niti will be implemented  within 100 days in which  the rate of paddy procurement would be fixed at Rs.3100 per quintal and the payment  will be transferred to the farmers within   48 hours through the DBT.

Majhi also announced that the Self Help Group scheme implemented  by the previous  BJD government  for empowerment of women in the state was faulty and said the  cabinet decided to implement  the  Subhadra Yojana   in the state  within the next 100 days under which  every woman will  receive a cash  voucher of Rs.50,000  which can be encashed  over two years.
