The Department of Pediatrics at AIIMS Bhopal celebrated ORS Day here the other day. The event highlighted the importance of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) in preventing dehydration in children and promoting overall child health. Prof. Singh emphasized that small, mindful actions can significantly contribute to the health and strength of future generations. He also underscored the importance of maintaining cleanliness for children, noting that unsanitary conditions are a major cause of various diseases. ORS Week, celebrated from July 25 to July 31, and ORS Day, observed on July 29, aim to spread awareness about diarrhea in children and the critical role of ORS in preventing and treating dehydration. This year, the event was organized in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and the Smart Unit of the Department of Pediatrics at AIIMS Bhopal. Various activities were held to educate the public about diarrhea prevention and the importance of ORS. One such program took place in the OPD area of AIIMS Bhopal, attracting about 110 participants. Dr. Shikha Malik, Head of the Pediatrics Department, discussed the theme of ORS Day 2024, "Prevention of Diarrhea, Cleanliness, and Take Care of Yourself with ORS." She emphasized the critical importance of cleanliness for children and highlighted that timely administration of ORS can prevent diarrhea-related deaths, which remain the third leading cause of mortality in children under five years of age. Dr. Bhavana Dhingra, Nodal Officer of the Smart Unit, provided detailed explanations on the use and benefits of various types of ORS, including Low Osmolarity ORS, Tri-Sodium Citrate ORS, Rice-based ORS, Homemade ORS, and Super ORS. Additionally, an awareness program was organized in the Smart Unit for the relatives of children admitted to the Pediatrics Department, with around 40 participants. This program focused on educating caregivers about the prevention and treatment of dehydration in children.
