BHOPAL: A complaint by activists to ensure a US corporation is available to India’s criminal justice system and pay 1.2 billlion US dollars as additional compensation for Bhopal gas disaster, is now resting in Bhopal’s Gautam Nagar police station Recently, CBI has forwarded 30 complaints by NGOs working for survivors to the MP police. The organisations are seeking decisive action to prevent Union Carbide Corporation(UCC) from escaping liability of crimes related to the disaster of 1984. The recent letter sent to the CBI gains importance as Dow-DuPont is ready to spin off Dow. Dow acquired Union Carbide Corp in 2001 more than 16 years after the tragedy, and 10 years after the $470 million settlement - paid by UCC and Union Carbide India and approved by the Indian Supreme Court.“Once UCC ceases to exist in its current form, India’s courts will have been stripped of their power to pursue and enforce the grave criminal charges still pending against it. Indian government needs to act now,” said activist Rachna Dhingra.
