Allahabad: Union minister Piyush Goyal announced that the Indian Railways would not levy any surcharge on train tickets booked by passengers during any religious Mela (fair) organised in any part of the country. The Union minister was addressing the audience during a programme organised to welcome India’s first engine-less and indigenously manufactured train Vande Bharat Express at Allahabad Junction on Friday.“When the Mela was about to start, I was told that a surcharge would be levied on passengers arriving or departing from Allahbad during the entire Kumbh-2019. While speaking at the event, the Union minister said that the decision was taken as there were no Rajdhani trains from Allahabad which travelled to Ranchi.Remembering the Pulwama martyrs, Goyal said, “The country will be demoralised by these cowardly acts and will give a befitting reply to those who have dared to think that we are weak,”A two minutes’ silence was also observed as a tribute to the CRPF jawans who had died in the terrorist attack in Pulawama in Srinagar on Thursday. I found it disturbing and within two hours I had signed the orders calling for the surcharge to be scrapped,” Goyal said.“And the decision holds not only for the Kumbh-2019 but for all other Melas to be organised in other part of the country throughout the year,” he added. As per rules, the various divisions of Indian Railways used to levy a surcharge ranging between Rs 5 and 40, depending on the class a passenger was travelling in, on the tickets purchased during the Mela period. The practice was followed during the nine-day Navratra festival at both Allahabad and Vindhiyachal railway stations.Goyal also announced that the New Delhi Ranchi Rajdhani Express (train number 12453/54)would be stopping for two minutes at Allahabad Junction, February 16 onwards. The announcement was made after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Allahabad Shyama Charan Gupta had requested that the train halt in the city.
