Agra: Student unions on Wednesday staged massive protests after holding a “Mahapanchayat” at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University over their various demands. Student leaders and supporters of National Student Union of India (NSUI) broke gate number 3 of the campus and forcibly entered, which landed them in a scuffle with policemen. NSUI was joined by Samajwadi Chatra Sabha (student wing of the SP) in the protests. The protesters demanded removal of the recently-introduced “gate pass” system, which aims to keep nuisance makers out of the campus. The students also protested vice chancellor Arvind Kumar Dixit’s “dictatorship”.Protestors were eventually dragged out of the campus. Apprehending disturbance in the campus, the university had already informed police and the administration in advance. Policemen and Provisional Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel had been deployed at the campus in large numbers since morning. The situation was brought under control after senior officials of the administration held a dialogue with the students and assured them that their demands would be met. However, the situation was controlled only after senior officials of the administration made dialog with students and gave assurance of suitable consideration on their demands.A member of All India Congress Committee, Amit Singh, who was a part of the protest, said that false cases had been registered against students for protesting. “The vice chancellor wants to crush every voice of dissent. Fake cases have been registered against student leaders for raising issues concerning students’ interests. Grievances are not addressed and incomplete results are being declared. Except leaders of the ABVP, student leaders of no other organization are allowed to enter the campus. We don’t have a problem with the gate pass system if applies for everyone equally. Agra MP Ramshanker Katheria is illegally living inside Khandari campus, he regularly takes political meetings there. BJP workers roam around the campus throughout the day. Why hasn’t the VC implemented the gate pass system in their cases?” Singh said.NSUI leader Gaurav Sharma however said that the district administration had taken their issued into account. “We have been asked to table our issues in a meeting with the divisional commissioner or district magistrate. The meeting will be scheduled within this week,” he said.“Our demands include the same rule for all campuses. If a gate pass is mandatory to enter the Paliwal campus, the same should apply for Khandari campus. Chief proctor Manoj Srivastava, in spite of having serious criminal cases against him, has been promoted against norms. We want a fair investigation in this regard. We also demand that he be removed from the post of chief proctor till the probe is on. Complete results should be declared in time and all cases registered against student leaders should immediately be withdrawn.”SCS leader Alok Yadav said, “The VC’s dictatorship will not be tolerated at any cost. Protests against the university administration for neglecting issues will continue.”Similar protests had taken place earlier also, leading to the arrest of some half a dozen student leaders.
