`Rishikesh: A gateway to Himalayas

With the beautiful scenery of the Himalayas and the holy Ganga flowing through it, the ancient city Rishikesh is one of the biggest pilgrimage hubs and tourist attractions in northern India. This city is located in Uttarakhand, a northern state of India. Every year several people from across the world reach here to learn yoga, meditation, and in search of peace. Therefore, it is commonly referred to the ‘yoga capital of the world’. Besides world-class ‘Yoga centers’ numerous ashrams, international centers of philosophical studies, Rishikesh has several mythological and religious importance. It is believed that this city was established in the 9th-century AD by Adi Shankaracharya. Rishikesh has several sightseeing locations which have religious connotations like Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Tera Manzil Mandir, Shri Bharat Mandir, Triveni Ghat, The Beatles Ashram, Shivpuri, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, and Jumpin Heights.

 Lakshman Jhula, one of the prominent places of Rishikesh is 450 feet long hanging bridge made up of iron, it is situated at the height of 70 feet from the holy river Ganga, which connects two villages, Tapovan in the Tehri Garhwal district and Jonk in the Pauri Garhwal district. This bridge has mythological importance also as it is believed that Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama, had crossed the river Ganga at this same site with the help of jute rope. Later, the jute rope bridge was replaced by an iron/steel bridge in 1929 AD and opened for the public in 1930 AD.

Ram Jhula, another hanging bridge in Rishikesh is located a few miles downstream from Laxman Jhula. This suspension bridge was built in 1980. This bridge is popular for its scenic vista. 450 feet long bridge is also renowned for linking two popular ashrams of the town – Swarg Ashram on one end and the Sivananda Ashram on the other.

Another interesting place to visit in Rishikesh is Triveni Ghat, which is popular for evening Ganga Arti. Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati are the three major holy rivers confluence at this ghat. This ghat is considered very sacred and it is believed that a person can purge his or her soul by dipping in the water of this ghat.

Tera Manzil Mandir is also popular as Trimbakeshwar Temple, is one of the most known temples of Rishikesh, which is located around 18 km from the heart of the city. This temple is popular for its 13 stories and beautiful architecture.

No visit to Rishikesh is complete without participation in the adrenaline-spiking water sport- river rafting, bungee jumping and the best place to try this sport is Shivpuri and Jumpin Height. Shivpuri is known as the hub of exciting adventure activities. Tourists can try a short 9-km or a long 21-km expedition.

Rishikesh is one of the beautiful and sacred places of Uttrakhand. It is a treasure of nature and spirituality. Every year the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board organizes the annual International Yog Festival (IYF) to attract thousands of yoga enthusiasts.  You can also visit here to fulfill your thirst for scenic beauty, health, and peace of mind.
