Hernia can occur to men, women, children and even newborn babies. Hernia refers to a condition or a gap in the abdominal wall leading to tissues to protrude or bulge out.  They occur near the diaphragm, abdomen or the groin.

The most reliable treatment for hernia is repairing it through a surgery. Today, most surgeons prefer to use Laparoscopic hernia repair as compared to open surgery or robotic surgery. Again, the surgeon decides on the repair procedure after examining the hernia and the health condition of the patient.

Dr. Samrat Jankar is an expert Gastroenterologist in Pune emphasizes on laparoscopic hernia repair as it is a minimally invasive procedure that causes minimal trauma to the patient while ensuring speedy recovery. In fact, the patient can go home on the very same day or the next day after the procedure.

Dr. Samrat Jankar states, ‘There have been immense advancements in hernia repair surgeries including laparoscopic hernia repair. The precision and accuracy with which the repair is done is marvelous implying phenomenal recovery and good results.’

In Laparoscopic hernia repair, the surgeon makes two or four small holes through the abdominal wall. The laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light on the end) along with select surgical instruments. Since, the incisions are very small, the surgery is known as the keyhole surgery. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

The surgeon can view the hernia from within the abdomen and also from the one side of the abdominal wall. The abdominal cavity is inflated using carbon dioxide enabling the surgeon to work inside the abdomen of the patient. The surgeon uses long instruments and performs the surgery remotely. Depending upon the hernia, its location and defect, it is covered with a mesh within the abdomen and staples are used through the muscle tissue in order patch it up.

There are various types of hernia which are named as per their location for instance, the hiatal hernia is found at the diaphragm while inguinal hernia occurs in the groin area and the femoral hernia occurs just below the inguinal ligament and in the upper area of the thigh. The umbilical hernia occurs at the navel due to the weakness in that area while incisional area is found at the surgical site.

Congenital or indirect hernia occur before birth due to improper development in the wall structure of the abdomen. On the other hand, direct hernias can occur due to any pressure in the weak spot of the hernia.  Over the time, further deterioration in the abdominal wall leads to formation of hernias. Other factors responsible for smoking, poor diet, chronic cough condition, obesity, and so on.

Speaking from experience, Dr. Jankar suggests laparoscopic hernia repair is ideal for treating incisional hernias, bilateral hernia wherein simultaneous repair is possible and also in case of recurrence of an earlier repaired hernia.
