Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently said that the world was largely unaware of independence activist Mahatma Gandhi until the release of Richard Attenboroughs 1982 film, Gandhi. Modi criticized the previous Congress-led governments for failing to adequately promote Gandhis legacy. Wasnt it our responsibility to get him that level of global recognition during the last 75 years? Nobody knew, please excuse me on this. The first time, when the Gandhi film was made (1982), the world got curious about who he might be. We didnt do the needful…If the world knew Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi was no less than them and you have to accept that. I am saying this after travelling the world that Gandhi and through him, India should have been recognised…," he said in response to a question about the Oppositions understanding of Indias culture and values. Following this comment, Congress on Wednesday accused PM Modi of destroying the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. "I dont know in which world the outgoing Prime Minister lives where Mahatma Gandhi was not recognized across the world before 1982. If anyone has destroyed the legacy of the Mahatma, it is the outgoing Prime Minister himself. His own government has destroyed Gandhian institutions in Varanasi, Delhi and Ahmedabad," wrote Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X. "This is the identity of RSS workers that they do not know the nationalism of Mahatma Gandhi. Nathuram Godse killed Gandhiji because of the environment created by their ideology. The 2024 election has taken place between Mahatma bhakts and Godse bhakts. The defeat of the outgoing Prime Minister and his Godse bhakt companions is obvious," he further added.
