Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Overview

BY-Animesh Ikshit

New Delhi, 4 June 2024: As the NDA stands poised to form the government for the third consecutive time, the election results reveal that while the coalition has secured a majority, the BJP on its own does not have an absolute majority.

A detailed constituency-wise analysis is essential, followed by an unbiased examination at both macro and micro levels. This will enable the NDA to develop a balanced approach towards a course correction that benefits a larger part of the Indian communities.

In the upcoming NDA government, which secured fewer than 300 out of 543 seats, the BJP itself won 240 seats. This is significantly less than what the incumbent government had anticipated for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Although the NDA made significant inroads in several new states, it underperformed in its traditional strongholds such as Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and particularly Uttar Pradesh, where the results were less favorable than expected.

Key Questions

1. Anti-Incumbency: What factors contributed to the anti-incumbency sentiment?
2. Polarisation: How did polarization influence the results?
3. Voter Turnout: Why was voter turnout low in the so-called "cow belt" of India?
4. Role of Cadre and Foot Soldiers: Did they meet their promises? Was there dissatisfaction among the cadre? Are senior members feeling respected and valued?

Challenges Ahead

The new government faces several challenges:

- Retaining Allies: Maintaining alliances with key partners like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu will be critical.
- Coalition Dynamics: Managing a coalition government will require delicate balancing, with the coalition`s success taking precedence over individual party interests.
- Policy Focus: The government is expected to prioritise infrastructure development and employment, with a focus on delivering tangible results rather than rhetoric.

Opposition Leaders

The two heroes of the opposition who can no longer be taken lightly are Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav. Their influence and strategies have significantly impacted the election outcomes, and their roles in shaping the political landscape will be crucial in the coming years.

The journey ahead will not be easy, and much will depend on the government`s ability to address these challenges effectively and deliver on its promises.
