The EVMs are sealed and stored in strongrooms in the parliamentary constituencies after the voting concludes. Before counting begins, several checks are performed to ensure the control units are sealed, correctly assigned and functioning properly. On the counting day, the machines are brought out by poll officials and the seals are removed. For the counting of votes polled through EVMs, the control unit of the machine is required. The counting process takes place in the presence of representatives of all political parties that took place in the election. In the first half-an-hour, only postal ballots are counted by the Returning Officer (RO). The counting of EVM votes takes place after 8.30 AM. (REUTERS/File Photo) Given that each parliamentary constituency comprises multiple assembly constituencies, vote counting for each assembly segment is conducted in a single hall where 14 tables are set up, and the control units of EVMs are distributed among them. If there is a large number of candidates, the number of halls or tables can be increased with prior permission from the Election Commission. The counting may occur at multiple locations within an assembly constituency under the supervision of an Assistant Returning Officer (ARO). In each round, votes from 14 EVMs are counted, and the results are announced and recorded on a blackboard at each table before proceeding to the next round. Counting supervisors and assistants, appointed by the RO through a randomisation process, count the votes at each table. The control unit of the EVM contains a Results button that displays the number of votes each candidate received, along with the total number of candidates per constituency. When the Results button is pressed, the EVM displays the votes secured by each candidate one by one, accompanied by beep sounds. After all the candidates votes are displayed, the control unit shows End.
