Lok Sabha Election 2024: What Are Exit Polls? How Are They Different From Opinion Polls?

Exit polls will be released on all channels on the evening of June 1. This will give an idea of whose government is coming to power registering a victory. However, exit polls have failed many times. At the same time, they have proved to be absolutely accurate many times. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, almost all exit polls had predicted the return of the Modi government. Exit poll is an election survey. On the day of voting, representatives of news channels and exit poll agencies are present at the polling booths. After voting, they ask voters some questions related to the election. A report is also prepared based on their answers. The analysis of this report shows which way the voters are inclined in the election. The special thing is that only voters are included in the exit poll survey. Why Are Exit Polls Released Only After The Last Phase Is Concluded? No exit poll or survey can be released after the announcement of the election schedule. Exit polls can be released only half an hour after the last phase of the voting ends in the evening. Under Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, there is a ban on releasing exit polls till half an hour after the voting ends in the last phase. Violation can be punished with two years imprisonment, fine or both. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had issued exit poll guidelines for the first time in 1998. In 2010, after the support of six national and 18 regional parties, the release of exit polls was prohibited during voting under Section 126A. However, the Election Commission wanted both opinion and exit polls to be banned. What Are Opinion Polls? The opinion poll is also an election survey. But it is done before the elections. All people are included in it. Being a voter is not mandatory. In this survey, the mood of the public is estimated area-wise on the basis of various issues including which scheme is more liked or disliked by the public, how happy the public is with which party, among several others.
