HEMIS (Ladakh): When it comes to education, there is often a conflict between tradition and modernity. But the Druk White Lotus School here at Shey has emerged as a unique combination of spiritual and modern education thanks to the vision of His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, founder of the school.

With urbanisation creeping in Ladakh like anywhere else in India, the new generation requires modern tools of education. No wonder the syllabus is geared for the overall development of the students.

The school which is also known as the Druk Padma Karpo School is named after Kunkhyen Padma Karpo, a 16th-century great scholar of the Drukpa Lineage. The school became famous as it was featured in the blockbuster Bollywood film ‘Three Idiots’. Since then the school has become a kind of tourist attraction with curious visitors to Ladakh making a point to see it.

The school has 800 students, including 350 hostellers. International organisations and individuals support the education of over 200 pupils whose parents cannot afford the fee.

The Principal of the school is Ms Stanzin Kunzang and there are 49 teachers. The school is well equipped with modern science labs. All students are taught Ladakhi folk and modern music. All the buildings are earthquake proof, and get electricity from the solar plants installed in the school premises.
