Visakhapatnam: Success depends on a number of factors, but is essentially determined by the competence and humility to realise that there is a lot to learn, said Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu . The Vice-President was the chief guest at the third convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Management-Visakhapatnam ( IIM-V ), conducted at the VMRDA Children’s Arena on Saturday. He awarded certificates and gold medals to meritorious students of the 2017-19 MBA batch.Delivering the convocation address, Naidu recalled his participation in the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the permanent campus of IIM-V in 2015. “I look forward to the day in 2021, when IIM-V would be operating from its own campus in wholesome surroundings, scaling up its activity profile in scope, spread and specialisation. I will definitely come on that day,” said Naidu.Naidu said that India cannot survive on imported food security. “While it accounts for less than a fifth of the GDP, agriculture still remains the main source of employment for nearly half of India’s labour force. We need greater on-farm value addition, agro-processing and innovative institutional arrangements to improve the bargaining strength of farmers in the market,” said Naidu.Naidu advised the graduating students to shun a sedentary lifestyle and junk food. “You should not forget five things in your life – parents, native place, mother country, mother tongue, guru,” said the Vice-President.Naidu said that India was once known as ‘vishwa guru’ (universal source of knowledge) and scholars from across the globe used to study at ancient institutions of higher learning like Takshashila, Nalanda and Pushpagiri. “Time has come for India to once again emerge as the global knowledge hub. For that to happen, the seats of learning, especially the universities, must reinvent themselves as hubs of vibrant intellectual pursuit and as centres of resolute research and innovation,” said Naidu. The Vice-President said that growth should be inclusive and reach every section of society. “In India, 20 per cent of the people are still living below the poverty line. We have a long way to reach a 100 per cent literacy rate. People are still judged by their caste, creed, religion and colour. We have to address all these issues,” said Naidu. The chairperson of the board of governors, IIM-V, Hari S Bhartia, said an architect and a project management consultant (PMC) have recently been finalised for the construction of the permanent campus. “We are set on building a world-class campus, which would also resonate with local architecture. The fourth industrial revolution is at our doorstep and manufacturing is going to be automated and bespoke. India’s digital economy by 2025 would be $1 trillion,” said Bhartia.IIM-V director, Professor M Chandrasekhar, presented the annual report and said that IIM-V has collected many firsts to its credit in the last four years of its journey. “From incubating the idea of a cohort of women entrepreneurs and introducing a PhD programme, to launching executive education programmes and creating the best environment conducive to learning, IIM-V has become the preferred destination for talent acquisition,” said Prof Chandrasekhar.Members of the board of governors, faculty, parents of the graduating students and others were present.
