Vegetables, fruits turn medium of voter awareness for vendors

Trichy: Trichy corporation opened a voter awareness stall at the Gandhi Market here on Friday as part of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme.Targeting vendors in the market who, including their family members will account for at least 15,000 votes in Trichy East assembly segment, the awareness drive was conducted to persuade eligible voters to cast their votes. Officials with the Ariyamangalam zone carved awareness slogans and symbols on the fruits and vegetables imitating electronic voting machines (EVM) to educate the voters.“We distributed awareness pamphlets insisting the street vendors not to receive any monetary benefits or gifts from any individual candidate or political party to participate in the election,” D S Duraimurugan, assistant commissioner, Ariyamangalam zone said.The stall comprising voter awareness slogans carved on fruits established opposite the War Memorial in Gandhi Market was inaugurated by district collector and returning officer of the constituency S Sivarasu.Earlier, the election officials also erected life-size banners of invitations near the market requesting the electorate to execute their democratic right in the ensuing elections without accepting and seeking favours.
