DMDK fields Dharmapuri doc in Trichy

Trichy: Dharmapuri-based medical professional V Elangovan will be the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate in the Trichy Lok Sabha constituency representing the AIADMK front. He was the party candidate in the Dharmapuri Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 though he was unsuccessful. Along with AIADMK’s support base, we will win the Lok Sabha segment,” a functionary with DMDK here said. He contested the 2016 assembly elections too in Dharmapuri, but came fourth after the DMK, AIADMK and PMK candidates. Though Elangovan is not a resident of the constituency, DMDK functionaries were confident of victory with the support of their allies.According to DMDK sources, Dr V Elangovan, 68, who hails from Gandhi Nagar in Dharmapuri town, was appointed as the party’s district secretary in 2007.

Presently, Elangovan is the presidium chairman of DMDK but the party’s decision to field an outsider in Trichy has come as a surprise.“We have significant vote bank in Pudukottai and Gandarvakkottai assembly segments falling under the parliamentary constituency. Along with AIADMK’s support base, we will win the Lok Sabha segment,” a functionary with DMDK here said.
