Thanjavur: Farmers from Thanjavur district who sold paddy at the direct procurement centres (DPCs) opened across the district have complained against non-payment of dues for more than 10 days. They have appealed to the officials to disburse the same immediately. The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) had opened 416 DPCs across Thanjavur district for the benefit of farmers who raised paddy during this samba season. Despite the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja, paddy farmers managed to safeguard their standing samba crop. Initially, the TNCSC opened 60 DPCs across the district to purchase samba paddy. Overall, 4.10 lakh tonnes of paddy had so far been procured from 416 DPCs functioning in the district since the kharif season that began on October 1, 2018, a senior official from TNCSC said.In the case of Trichy district, a total of 18,000 tonnes of paddy had been so far procured through 34 DPCs during the kharif season, the official added. But farmers from Thanjavur alleged that there has been a delay of more than 10 days to get money from DPCs. “The very purpose of sending money through ECS (Electronic Clearing System) is immediate settlement. So, the money should be credited to the account of the farmers on the same day. However, farmers from Thanjavur have not been getting money for the last 10 days. Crores of rupees have to be settled to several hundreds of farmers for selling their produce at DPCs”, said the secretary of Thanjavur District Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, Swamimalai R Vimalnathan. When contacted, a TNCSC official said they had been disbursing the bills in the range of Rs 20 crore a day. The delay had been due to network problems. Some discrepancies with the savings bank account of farmers were also causing the delay. The entire money would be settled within a few days, the official said.
