Work on Karaikal – Peralam new line to commence soon

Following their demands the railways announced a survey for restoring the Karaikal – Peralam segment.At present, trains bound for Karaikal from Peralam are taking a detour via Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Nagore, travelling 65km.Once the project is completed, connectivity up to Sirkazhi via Thirunallar, Tharangambadi, Thirukadayur, Akkur can be fructified, deputy general secretary of Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) D Manoharan said.“The restoration of the section will facilitate commuters from Peralam to reach Karaikal with ease. The new line would help generate additional passengers and freight traffic,” he further stated.Meanwhile, a senior official from the Trichy railway division said that the railway board has sanctioned the required fund for the execution of the project.Required railway land is available on both sides of the old railway line along the section.So, there is no need to execute the process of acquisition of private lands for this work. Trichy: A three-decade wait for the conversion of the 23km-long Karaikal – Peralam railway line will come to an end as the railway board has sanctioned Rs 177.69 crore to commence the project.The new broad gauge line between this section, which is likely to be completed early next year, will be executed along with electrification of the line.The project will also include material modification to gauge conversion of Trichy – Nagore – Karaikal with the extension of Nagapattinam – Velankanni –Thiruthuraipoondi, officials said.In a letter to the general manager of Southern Railway, the board stated about detailed estimation for the gauge conversion of Karaikal - Peralam section.According to estimate, Rs 136.60 crore has been sanctioned for civil work and Rs 18.44 crore for electrical and yard arrangements, the circular added.The 23km metre gauge railway line between the section was commissioned way back in 1898, and it was wound up for traffic in 1987.Despite repeated appeals for restoration of the line, the section remained non-operational for more than three decades, commuters said.
