Thiruvananthapuram: Poojapura police have registered a case and launched a probe after a Peyad resident complained that he lost Rs 2 lakh from his bank account through some debit card transactions done in Bihar, on Friday.According to Jayakumaran Nair (43), a document writer, he lost the money from his SBI account at Valiyavila branch here in ten separate transactions done between March 14 and 18. Each time a sum of Rs 20,000 was withdrawn.“I have been using this account since 2001 and the debit card for the past five years. However, I have used it only once to withdraw money from ATM six months ago,” Nair said, adding that he always preferred to withdraw money from the bank using cheques. Since he seldom resorted to ATM transactions, he did not notice the alert messages sent from the bank each time a frund transaction was made.“On March 13, a sum of Rs 5 lakh was deposited to my account. On March 18, I transferred a sum of Rs 2 lakh to an acquaintance through cheque transaction. After that, when I checked my SMS inbox, the balance amount was shown as Rs 1 lakh instead of Rs 3 lakh,’’ he said. Following this, he applied for a mini statement from the bank and found out that cash was withdrawn in multiple transactions done from Patna in Bihar. He immediately alerted the bank and blocked his debit card. He also reported the matter to the cyber cell under city police commissioner. Later, the police complaint was filed.“The bank has conducted an inquiry and promised to return the entire sum within a month’s time because they were convinced that the money was lost not due to my fault,’’ he said.Police sources said that this theft could be a result of data leak.
