Meghalaya: Bypoll to Selsella assembly seat also in first phase

SHILLONG: Meghalaya will vote to elect its two Lok Sabha members on April 11 next, even as the model code of conduct came into effect from Sunday with the Election Commission announcing the national poll schedule.The hill state will go to the polls on the first phase of the 7-phase elections to elect Lok Sabha members from the Shillong and Tura parliamentary constituencies as announced by the Election Commission in New Delhi on Sunday.The bye-election to the Selsella legislative assembly seat in the West Garo Hills, which felt vacant following demise of sitting legislator of Congress, Clement Marak will also be held on the same day. "The model code of conduct has come into effect and the election department will strictly monitor its implementation in letter and spirit," a senior official in the state election department said today.While the Shillong Parliamentary seat is currently represented by Vincent H Pala of the Congress, the Tura Lok Sabha seat is vacant with the resignation of Conrad K'ongkal Sangma, president of the National People's Party (NPP), who had to give it up last year in order to continue as chief minister of the state.Conrad had won the Tura assembly seat, after it was vacated by his sister Agatha, who is expected to be the NPP candidate from Tura in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
