Girl fixing clothes line electrocuted

A trader from Ankur Vihar, Mohan Lal, was electrocuted on December 29 after an 11kV overhead cable allegedly snapped and fell on him. They also demanded compensation for the victim’s family as well as replacement of worn out wires with new ones in the area. Residents had shut down a power sub-station the next day in protest.

Ghaziabad: A 14-year-old girl from Gurgaon who had gone to her elder sister’s house in Loni’s SLF Ved Vihar Colony died of electrocution on Wednesday when an aluminium wire that she was tying on the terrace for drying clothes touched a high-tension wire. Her elder sister also suffered an electric shock but miraculously survived.The accident happened around 11 am when Radha Sharma, a student of class VIII, and her elder sister Sanjana went to the terrace for tying the wire. “The aluminium wire touched the 11kV high tension wire passing along the building,” a police official said.Radha was immediately rushed to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in Delhi, where she succumbed to her injuries. However, no FIR has been registered in the case so far as the family has not yet given a written complaint, said SHO of Loni police station Sanjay Verma.But as news of her death spread in Loni, residents staged a protest at the local electricity office in the evening and forced officials to shut down power supply in the area for nearly two hours. They also demanded compensation for the victim’s family as well as replacement of worn out wires with new ones in the area. Police had to resort to mild baton charge to disperse the crowd.Residents alleged negligence on the part of the power department, saying despite repeated requests to provide insulated wires following similar accidents in the past, no action has been taken so far. “Some two years back, both hands of a woman, Neelam, had to be amputated after she came in contact with a high-tension wire in the same colony while drying clothes from her balcony,” said a resident.Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited’s sub-divisional officer (Loni) Gopal Singh said compensation could be given to the family.This is the second such accident in the area in the past two weeks.
